Does your car insurance require a tracker?

For many prestige and performance vehicles in London, a tracker isn’t optional — it’s a condition of cover. Here’s how to know, and how to comply without risking your claim.

When a tracker is required

Insurers attach a tracker condition when a vehicle’s value and theft risk are high enough that recovery becomes part of the underwriting. In practice that means most prestige, performance and luxury cars above a certain value — and almost all high-risk models such as Range Rover, Land Rover, and many German and Italian brands — carry some form of tracker requirement.

It can appear at the point of quote, at renewal, or as an endorsement added mid-term after a model becomes a known theft target. It’s easy to miss.

How to read your policy

Look in your policy schedule and statement of fact for a tracking device condition or security endorsement. The key things to identify:

  • Is a tracker required at all? Look for wording like “You must have a tracking device fitted and operational.”
  • Which Thatcham category? The schedule may specify S5 or S7. If it says S5, an S7 won’t satisfy it.
  • Must it be professionally fitted? Most require professional installation with a certificate — self-fit devices usually don’t qualify.
  • Subscription active? A tracker condition almost always requires the monitoring subscription to be live and maintained.

If you’re unsure, don’t guess. Send us a photo of the relevant section of your schedule and we’ll tell you exactly what’s required — the category, the fitting standard and the certification — before you spend anything.

The risk of getting it wrong

This is the part that matters most. If your policy requires a tracker and one isn’t fitted — or it’s the wrong category, not professionally certificated, or the subscription has lapsed — your insurer can refuse to pay a theft claim. You could lose a six-figure car and the cover you were paying for. Meeting the condition properly is not an upsell; it’s the difference between a valid and an invalid claim.

Which tracker satisfies it

If your schedule names a category, follow it exactly. If it only says “Thatcham-approved tracker,” an S5 is the safest choice for a high-value vehicle because it includes driver-recognition tags and automatic unauthorised-movement alerts. An S7 may be acceptable for lower-value cars. For the strongest position, many owners pair a tracker with an aftermarket immobiliser — some insurers reduce premiums where one is fitted.

Why professional certification matters

A certificate of installation from an accredited fitter is what your insurer actually wants to see. It confirms the device, the category and that it was fitted to standard. We provide this certification on the day of installation, so your cover is valid from the moment we finish — and we fit at your home or office anywhere in London and Surrey.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I know if my policy requires a tracker?
Check your policy schedule and statement of fact for a tracking device condition or security endorsement. If you can’t find clear wording, send us the relevant section and we’ll confirm what’s required at no cost.
What happens if I don’t fit a required tracker?
Your insurer can refuse to pay a theft claim if a required tracker isn’t fitted, is the wrong category, isn’t professionally certificated, or the subscription has lapsed. Meeting the condition correctly keeps your cover valid.
Does the tracker subscription need to stay active?
Yes. A tracker condition almost always requires the monitoring subscription to be live and maintained. A lapsed subscription can invalidate the condition.
Can you provide the certificate my insurer needs?
Yes. We provide the installation certification your insurer requires on the day we fit, so your cover is valid immediately.
