For many prestige and performance vehicles in London, a tracker isn’t optional — it’s a condition of cover. Here’s how to know, and how to comply without risking your claim.
Insurers attach a tracker condition when a vehicle’s value and theft risk are high enough that recovery becomes part of the underwriting. In practice that means most prestige, performance and luxury cars above a certain value — and almost all high-risk models such as Range Rover, Land Rover, and many German and Italian brands — carry some form of tracker requirement.
It can appear at the point of quote, at renewal, or as an endorsement added mid-term after a model becomes a known theft target. It’s easy to miss.
Look in your policy schedule and statement of fact for a tracking device condition or security endorsement. The key things to identify:
If you’re unsure, don’t guess. Send us a photo of the relevant section of your schedule and we’ll tell you exactly what’s required — the category, the fitting standard and the certification — before you spend anything.
This is the part that matters most. If your policy requires a tracker and one isn’t fitted — or it’s the wrong category, not professionally certificated, or the subscription has lapsed — your insurer can refuse to pay a theft claim. You could lose a six-figure car and the cover you were paying for. Meeting the condition properly is not an upsell; it’s the difference between a valid and an invalid claim.
If your schedule names a category, follow it exactly. If it only says “Thatcham-approved tracker,” an S5 is the safest choice for a high-value vehicle because it includes driver-recognition tags and automatic unauthorised-movement alerts. An S7 may be acceptable for lower-value cars. For the strongest position, many owners pair a tracker with an aftermarket immobiliser — some insurers reduce premiums where one is fitted.
A certificate of installation from an accredited fitter is what your insurer actually wants to see. It confirms the device, the category and that it was fitted to standard. We provide this certification on the day of installation, so your cover is valid from the moment we finish — and we fit at your home or office anywhere in London and Surrey.
